R.D. Olson Breaks Ground on Residence Inn by Marriott in San Carlos, California

Apr 19 2016

Newport Beach, Calif. and San Carlos, Calif. – April 13, 2016 – R.D. Olson Development is breaking ground on its latest hotel development, the 204-room, Residence Inn by Marriott Silicon Valley at 595 Industrial Road in San Carlos, California. Executives from R.D. Olson Development, Marriott International and general contractor Deacon Corp. will join civic leaders including San Carlos Mayor Cameron Johnson at the ceremonial groundbreaking.

Located immediately adjacent to the 101 Freeway and within two miles of Oracle’s headquarters, Residence Inn by Marriott Silicon Valley will serve the region’s vibrant technology-based business community. Located in an area that is home to 16 Fortune 500 companies, including Apple, Intel, Facebook and Google, and thousands of entrepreneurial startups, the hotel will help to meet the extended-stay needs of the area’s business travelers. Construction is planned for completion in summer of 2017.

“The San Carlos market has a unique need for extended-stay product. In fact, a large number of visitors to the area stay between seven nights and three months,” said Bob Olson, founder and CEO of R.D. Olson Development. “With Residence Inn by Marriott Silicon Valley, we look forward to providing a comfortable and convenient environment for these visitors, and others, to re-energize, work and play.”

As is customary for all R.D. Olson Development hotels, Residence Inn by Marriott Silicon Valley is designed around a theme that pays homage to the local area, in this case the influence of Bair Island on the coast of the San Francisco Peninsula and the booming technology industry of Silicon Valley. The use of a wooden open truss ceiling and real wood flooring in the lobby, paired with dark brick siding and finished millwork, creates a warehouse feel that speaks to the hotel’s Millennial-minded, tech-savvy clientele while remaining relaxing and authentic.

“The mix of natural materials, minimalist clean lines, and locally relevant art will give this property a vibe that feels genuine and comfortable,” said Sue Ellen Langford, vice president of interiors at R.D. Olson Development.

The four-story, 148,596-square-foot hotel is designed with all-suite room mix that includes more than 500 beds, including king, queen and pullout couch configurations. The mix caters well to weekday business and extended-stay guests, but also affords convenience to weekend leisure travelers.

Guest suites include full kitchens, ample workspace areas and upscale bathrooms. Additional amenities include upgraded technology features, such as high-speed WiFi, multi-device accessible outlets, and big screen TVs with full connectivity and the ability to stream Netflix and Hulu without charge.

“When developing a property with extended-stay customers in mind, it’s important to incorporate elements that will make staying at the property feel more like home,” said Jonathon Vopinek, vice president of asset management and marketing at R.D. Olson Development. “The features we’ve incorporated in Residence Inn by Marriott Silicon Valley – such as Netflix and Hulu streaming capabilities and a state-of-the-art fitness center – will provide guests with the ability to maintain their lifestyle while away from home.”

The new Residence Inn by Marriott Silicon Valley will offer 1,500 square feet of meeting and pre-function space, accommodating the needs of guests, as well as local businesses. The hotel will also feature a four-story surface parking structure, with public parking on the ground floor. Public area amenities will include a fitness center, full-service business center, breakfast area and guest laundry. The hotel will include a variety of outdoor amenities such as a pool and spa, an outdoor patio complete with fire pits and a state-of-the-art sports court.

Los Angeles-based DLR Group will perform architecture for the hotel, and Seattle-based Degen & Degen will perform interior design.

R.D. Olson Development began developing hotels in 1997 and has been especially active over the past five years. Recent Marriott brand hotels include Courtyard by Marriott hotels in Irvine, Oceanside and Goleta, California, and Maui, Hawaii; Residence Inn by Marriott hotel in San Juan Capistrano and Tustin, California; a SpringHill Suites in Burbank, California; and a Fairfield Inn & Suites hotel in Tustin, California.
